Reach your sobriety goals in 2022

Published On: 10 March 2022

Sobriety doesn’t have to be a long and difficult endeavor. You have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to goals for the new year, but if the goal of getting sober in 2022 is something you are considering, here are some tips to help you along your way!

Tip #1: Get an Accountability Partner

Some people can get sober by themselves, but many times a solid support network is necessary. This might include a professional counselor, a personal trainer, a spouse, family members, or a good friend. If you are ready to go to rehab and detox, it could mean a lot to have someone else there to stay with you during that time. It could also help to have someone to talk to when you are feeling discouraged.

Tip #2: Stay Busy

One of the most important things you can do for yourself if you are struggling with addiction is to stay busy. If you aren’t busy, you will be tempted to use alcohol or drugs.

Tip #3: Work on Your Long-Term Goals

If you base your long-term goals on recovery, then you will be less tempted to turn to alcohol and drugs. If you want to stop using so that you can raise a family ー or for any other long-term goal ー then you have to have faith that you have the ability to do it.

Tip #4: Make the Right Decisions for Long-Term Health

Think about your life long-term. If you have serious health problems, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, or you have diabetes or another chronic illness, you need to address those things. You should also get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, and exercise regularly.

Tip #5: Start Getting into a Rhythm

If you want to get sober, you need to get into a rhythm that involves being sober. Getting into a rhythm is one of the hardest things to do, but if you are committed to getting sober, you can do it.

Tip #6: Replace Drinking or Drugs with Something Else

This is a great way to use positive reinforcement. If you are trying to quit drinking or using drugs, replace that activity with a healthy activity such as a knitting club or taking a cooking class.

Tip #7: Change Your Environment

Changing your environment can be a huge help with recovery. It is important that you remove triggers from your life so that you don’t have to relapse. If you have a tendency to drink every night, for example, make an effort to hang out with friends on Sunday afternoons instead of at the bar. You can also make sure your rooms are organized and your house is clean so you don’t have to struggle to find things while you are around the house.

Tip #8 Start with the basics

Research is important when making any big decision. When you are dealing with a substance abuse problem, you have to be especially careful about the information you seek out. If you have a good relationship with your doctor and your psychiatrist, this will be the first place for you to start. Seek out their advice on your options, and let them help you figure out what is best for your situation. Do you have a psychologist in your insurance network that you can visit? Do you have a primary care physician with whom you are comfortable? Do you have a family doctor you can trust? These are all questions that should be posed to your professionals before you even think about how you want to manage your sobriety.
